Ah Prague. What a terrificly splendid city. So splendid in fact, that it made the cut for ‘the cities I would go back to in a heartbeat‘. Brimming with history, lavished in charm and adorned with orange roof tops, Prague has such a buzz. The Czech capital is undeniably beautiful and the beer is mega cheap, what more could you want? This little travel guide to the city will cover some of the iconic hot spots, must do’s and a couple of lesser known restaurants that cater brilliantly for all you fellow vegetarians out there.
Climb Petřín Lookout Tower
Now if you know me, you know I am all about the viewpoints, Petrín Park does not disappoint! As the city’s biggest green space, there is no better place to appreciate the sweeping views over the city. This particular shot was taken from the Petřín Lookout Tower (which looks remarkably like the Eiffel). Climb the 299 steps to the top and enjoy an awesome view of the Czech capital.
Feel the peace and Love at John Lennon Wall
Take a wander through the riverside Kampa neighbourhood and visit the infamous John Lennon Wall. Towards the end of the Communism era, students began writing John Lennon lyrics on this wall, as a way to air their grievances and share their hopes and dreams. Today, this colourful stretch of the city represents love and peace and is posed in front of by many tourists.
Dazz about by the Dancing Building
Located by the Vltava River, check out this jazzy installation that caused much controversy. When this piece of deconstructivist architecture was opened, it was a hot topic of conversation as to whether it was suitable for its surroundings built in the late 1800s. Pop on by and make up your own mind. Models dancing hair is completely thanks to a well timed gust of wind.
Fancy a date at the Opera
Opera probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Prague. Luckily, Prague was one of the few cities to survive World War II without extensive damage, and the Estates Theatre or Stavovské is a masterpiece in itself. We went to see Valmont and although we didn’t understand a word and it was approximately a 100 degrees inside, it was a fabulously elegant evening. The tickets were mega cheap at approx £5.00 each and we managed to bag a table with drinks waiting for us in the interval.
Swing by and see the Astronomical Clock Chime the Hour
Whilst in the Old Town Square, experience a visualisation of time like no other. 600 years and still going strong this is one of the oldest and best preserved mechanical clocks in the world. This is one of the cities most popular sites, I mean could we read it? No. And watching the 12 apostles passing through the window above the astronomical dial was pretty anticlimactic. Nonetheless, the detail and artistry is terrific and this is a must on any Prague bucket list.
Watch the Sunset over the Vltava River
Now I think this photo speaks for itself. Find yourself a spot along the Vltava River and watch the sunset, you won’t regret it. Prague has a pretty eclectic skyline, coined the ‘city of a thousand spires’ and it looks ever so dreamy awash in pastel pinks and orange.
Eat Incredible Vegetarian Food at Lehka Hlava
Prague was the first city Josh and I visited after deciding to go vegetarian. To this day, the vegetarian food is still some of the best we have eaten! Located on Boršov street this quirky little spot served up some incredible dishes. Reservations are recommended as this place gets super busy. The menu at Lehka Hlava comprises a range of options from cantonese tofu, halloumi, thai green tofu and quesadillas.
Appreciate the Marvellous stained glass windows of St. Vitus Cathedral
St Vitus Cathedral is an absolute gem. Located by Prague Castle, St. Vitus is a fabulous example of Gothic architecture. Upon entering Prague Castle, you will spot the impressive gothic towers standing tall above the surrounding red roofs. Wander inside and you will be mesmerised by the stunning colours of the beautiful stained glass windows.
Take A Wander through Old Town Square
A trip to Prague isn’t complete without visiting Old Town Square. Dating back to the 12th Century, the Square has been the backdrop to many historical events. Lined with intricately decorated Art Nouveau buildings and charming cobbled side streets, it is one of the most visited areas in the city and you’ll find many attractions such as the Astronomical Clock, the Church of Our Lady Before Týn and the Old Town Hall. Day or night, this place is buzzing with people but the atmosphere is great and there are so many cute cafes to stop for a drink.
Wander through Mala Strana
Squeezed between Prague Castle and the River Vltava, the Mala Strana district or ‘Lesser Town’ makes for a beautiful afternoon stroll. Mala Strana is one of Prague’s most historic areas. Think quaint winding streets, gorgeous little courtyards and plenty of pastel coloured 16th century buildings.
Dinner at Pasta Fresca
Located super close to Old Town Square Pasta Fresca serves up handmade pasta, exceptional service and incredible value for money. Take my word for it. Great for non-vegetarians too!
Soak Up the Atmosphere on Charles Bridge
The epicentre of this glorious city. The image that springs to mind when you think of Prague. Charles Bridge is splendid. There is never a bad time to find yourself wandering across this stretch of the river. The hustle and bustle, the views, the music, the stalls selling arts and crafts – it’s picture perfect.
