The Best Spots To See The Cherry Blossom in Tokyo

Best spots for Cherry Blossom Viewing in Tokyo - Meguro River

Looking for the best spots for cherry blossom viewing in Tokyo? No worries, we found them. We were truly spoilt on our trip to Japan in 2018, the weather was beautiful and it was honestly uncanny that we managed to arrive in every city just as the blossom was in full bloom.

I mean we planned to visit during sakura season. But we could never have anticipated it working out so spot on. Although I imagine the city looks beautiful year round, there is genuinely something so magical about the capital being adorned in blossom in every shade of pink to white for such a fleeting period.

Cherry blossom is an extremely significant symbol in Japanese culture. Aside to its very aesthetically pleasing quality, these dainty blossoms are so much more than just a flower, they are intrinsically tied to an age old philosophy, one that encourages the appreciation of the beauty of ephemeral elements.

The average bloom lasts for two weeks, thus reminding us that life is so very short and we should absolutely make the most of every second. Over the years, the significance of cherry blossom has been interlaced with a number of different life events for the Japanese, such as the arrival of spring, the beginning of a new school year, the planting of crop cycles, a symbol of hope during the war and in particular today, cherry blossom is recognised as a national symbol and is given as a gift to officials arriving in to Japan.

Best spots for Cherry Blossom Viewing in Tokyo

When to go: Generally speaking end of March early April is going to be prime time cherry blossom viewing, but always make sure you check the blossom forecast for real time updates!

So without further ado, I shall keep this short and sweet, here are my four favourite spots to view the blossoms and partake in Hanami which for those who don’t know, is a picnic with your nearest and dearest under the blossoms.

Meguro River

Easily the most beautiful viewing is along the banks of the Meguro River. Nakameguro is the hot spot but anywhere along this 5km stretch is pretty splendid. Wander through the day and catch the sun dancing between the dainty blossoms and be sure to stay through until sun down, grab a glass of pink champagne and admire the thousands of bright pink lanterns reflecting on the river.

Yoyogi Park

Best spots for Cherry Blossom Viewing in Tokyo - Yoyogi Park

Yoyogi Park 代々木公園 is one of the largest national parks in Tokyo. There are around 700 cherry trees at Yoyogi Park. It’s the perfect spot for hanami, so hit up the nearest supermarket and grab all your favourite snacks, drinks, a sheet/blanket is also a good purchase and check for the up to date rules but we also took a bottle of fizz with us. You’ll be impressed by the banquet situations that are constructed. We watched a guy build a table and enough room for 12 people out of cardboard boxes. Oh and don’t be a dick make sure you pack your rubbish away and pop it in the bin at the end.

Shinjuku Gyoen

Best spots for Cherry Blossom Viewing in Tokyo - Shinjuku Gyoen

Shinjunku Gyoen 新宿御苑 a wonderfully peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and super popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, due to its 400+ blossoming trees. The park is only open from 09.00-16.00 and there is a small entrance fee of 200¥. There is a marvellous array of landscaped gardens, green houses and water features. You could spend an entire day just wandering around taking in the surroundings.

Ueno Park

Ueno Park 上野公園 features more than 1000 cherry blossom trees along the streets leading towards the National Museum and around Shinobazu Pond. Another fantastic spot to settle in for an afternoon hanami and appreciate this spectacular flower festival.

Note that Tokyo is super well connected, so most central areas of the city are easily accessible.

Thank you for such an insightful post and for writing about places to stay!
I was so happy to have been able to go to all of the places you’ve mentioned in this post, and that I was able to see the cherry blossom season before I left Japan! My only worry is that it’s been happening earlier each year, and I worry that I’ll miss it completely the next time I go…
